I look like no one else, barely look like this guy ...
Sitting in the lobby at WMC Memphis on Union, waiting to interview with WMC-FM's PD Gary Guthrie, Gary walked right past me and said, "Hi, John!" He later apologized for mistaking me for John Conlee, whom Gary thought was there to go on their country-formatted AM.
My first wife and I were waiting backstage at Busch Gardens/Williamsburg for me to do the radio dj intro thing for Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers. Larry ran up to me and said, "John, would you watch my kids while we play?" and handed off his children to us. We just nodded and took care of their kids, adding them to ours.
By the time John Conlee came to a club in Richmond/VA to perform, we both knew what we needed to do.
See, John and I looked a lot alike back then. And we were both a little, well, husky. So I took his rose-colored glasses and walked onstage at the band's cue. I took the glasses off, the band became confused and the crowd went nuts, recognizing me from previous appearances. Conlee came out and we all had a big time.
Best. Radio. Promotion. In the '80's. Award to me.
And, by the way, John Conlee was one of the nicest performers I ever worked with. A real gentleman.
Ooh, a response: Another dull, self-centered story from the past. I thought this site was about St. Louis Media. Why all the entries showing pictures of yourself, a dog, bullets, etc.? Do you REALLY think anyone cares about that? It's so boring and annoying. Save that crap for a Facebook page, please.
I really don't care what you think. It's my website, a-hole! What part of that do you not understand? You make me laugh!
