John Auble retires from KTVI/Fox2 ...

The true measure of a man is taken at the end of his career and no one... no one ...can say anything unpleasant about him.  That's how it is with John Auble, retiring this day from 23 years as a reporter, columnist and anchor at Fox2/KTVI and many years before as a newspaper reporter, a radio host and a local business owner and operator.

You've read the pieces on Auble from that curly-headed local newspaper gossip reporter who has tried unsuccessfully for years to replace Jerry Berger, who actually knows some guys.

What made John Auble a star during his career here was that he's a character. John has always had a special point of view and a special way of presenting it, in print or on the air.  Herb Humphries, Dick Ford and Don Marsh, those guys, too.

We just don't see that anymore in newspeople.  The new guys are pasteurized and homogenized, deepfried and frenchfried, with makeup guys and hairstylists.  John, I bet, would have pulled a .38 Special out of his raincoat and warned the guy with the hotcomb to step back from the reporter's head.

I always liked his work.  I'll miss it terribly on the air.

John Auble is retiring due to illness and I wish him the very best.
