From TomTaylor, via BIAKelsey:
It’s WTOP, then three more all-newsers in the top 10 billers ranked by BIA/Kelsey.
The research firm’s Dr. Mark Fratrik says the four all-news stations and one all-sports station pull audiences that are “very attractive to national and local advertisers, and thus these stations can generate substantial revenues.” Call it loyalty, engagement, well-earned habit – it works for them. There are also a couple of CHRs, a big AC, and an alternative rocker on the list -
◊ 1 - Bonneville all-newser WTOP, Washington, D.C. - $57,225,000, out of a market total of $255,000,000. That means WTOP is now hauling in more than 22% of the market’s total radio revenue.
◊ 2 - Clear Channel CHR KIIS-FM, Los Angeles - $54,000,000.
◊ 3 - CBS Radio's all-news WCBS-AM, New York - $49,000,000.
◊ 4 - Clear Channel's talk KFI, Los Angeles - $46,000,000.
◊ 5 - Clear Channel's AC "Lite" WLTW, New York - $44,300,000.
◊ 6 - Clear Channel CHR "Z100" WHTZ, New York - $43,000,000.
◊ 7 - CBS all-news WBBM-AM, Chicago - $42,500,000.
◊ 8 - CBS all-news "1010 WINS", New York - $41,000,000.
◊ 9 - CBS all-sports "Fan" WFAN, New York - $40,500,000.
◊ 10 - CBS alternative KROQ-FM, Los Angeles - $39,000,000.
Mark Fratrik says another talk-based station almost made the list – Tribune’s WGN, Chicago. BIA/Kelsey didn’t release revenues outside the top 10, but TRI believes the BIA/Kelsey number for WGN is $38,800,000. It just missed tying with KROQ by 200 grand. Another way to slice this year’s top 10 list is by owner. CBS Radio has five. Clear Channel has four. Bonneville has WTOP – the #1 biller, and the only one that’s not in a Top 3 market.
