Setting goals with an obituary ...

I ran across this idea in a blog I read, the name of which I do not remember, over the New Year's weekend.  And, at my age, it makes a lot of sense.  It's something I should have done all those years ago.

It's impossible to know how you want to wind up when you look at life from the short end.  "I want to be a brain surgeon" and  "I want to be a rocket scientist" or "I want to be a rocket surgeon" are wonderful goals.  But what really counts is how you will really be remembered at the long end.  What did you actually do?  What did you actually accomplish?  Who will remember you?

So write your own obituary.  Write it now, today, presuming your death at an advanced age.  Write it as you would, as a journalist, including professional and academic and family accomplishments and associations.

Then live up to it.
