93KHJ, Los Angeles ...

You can hear the way those calls sing in your head, if you're a radio Old Dog

C'mon, who among us didn't have a 5" reel of the Drake AA Image Pack in a moving box once upon a time (with that annoying 25Hz tone throughout)?  Tell me you never cut those incredible jingles into a production studio aircheck to make yourself sound bigger? Which of you never wanted to work your copy into that killer three-note-and-sustain news intro?

Ron Jacobs, the original KHJ PD, wrote the book, as well he should have.  It sells for $93 as a vanity published project and it's worth every Boss Buck.  And you just will not believe why the station's first jingles were acapella.  Would you ever consider that an AFM strike in Hollywood had something to do with it?

Larry Shannon, at RadioDailyNews, is publishing excerpts.  This is the history where my radio career began.
