St. Louis Globe-Democrat Names Rob Rains Sports Editor

The new online St. Louis Globe-Democrat has named veteran sportswriter Rob Rains as its sports editor and lead baseball writer.

The new Globe-Democrat will debut on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Rains, who has covered sports in St. Louis and nationally for more than 30 years, previously worked for the print edition of the Globe-Democrat from 1984 to 1986, covering the Cardinals.

"I am excited to once again be focused on covering the Cardinals on a regular basis, and to help lead a dedicated and experienced staff in providing our readers with quality sports coverage," Rains said.

Rains, a graduate of the University of Kansas, started his career as a reporter with United Press International. He also spent five years as the National League beat writer for USA Today Baseball Weekly, now Sports Weekly. He is a lifetime member of the Baseball Writers Association of America and the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Rains also is a veteran author, having written biographies or the autobiographies of many sports celebrities, including Tony La Russa, Jack Buck and Ozzie Smith. His biography of Mark McGwire, Home Run Hero, reached The New York Times' bestseller list in 1998. His most recent book was published in October, a biography of basketball inventor James Naismith, co-written with Naismith's granddaughter.

Rains said the other members of the Globe's sports staff will be announced in the near future and will include names familiar to St. Louis sports fans.

"We are very pleased with the staff we have assembled," Rains said. "I am confident readers of the new online Globe-Democrat will be well informed and entertained by our writers and by all of the multimedia features we have planned for the site."
