Conservative paper, a 'labor of love,' comes to an end

Roland Wetzel's "labor of love" is over. The final issue of The Republican newspaper arrived in approximately 8,000 mailboxes earlier this month.

"It has been an interesting 16-year ride," says Roland, of St. Charles.

Planning began in 1993, and since 1994 he and his wife Dee have published the conservative paper every two months. The staff was all-volunteer. From the start, Roland says, the idea was to break even.
