I tried to send Taylor my "secretest" radio story. So far, he's declined to publish:
Secrets:
One of my earliest PD gigs, in the early 1970's, was at a 1Kw-D/250w-N AM in a small Midwest market. The owner had moved the station from a downtown office building to a modular setup at the transmitter site, near a river that flowed into one of the Great Lakes. The ground system was well-watered; when it rained heavily, the field between the building and the river swamped, drained quickly and kept the field moist year-round.
It was also a great (but unspoken) advertisement for our Saturday morning ag show: the CE had sown the field around the tower with some of his "special seeds" and grew an annual crop of some of the region's finest marijuana.
It was surrounded with a fence and brightly painted signs declaring it an "FCC Restricted Area" and "Electrocution Hazard" that kept everyone (including law enforcement) away.
