I told my radio website clients to do this ...

... TEN YEARS ago!  It's almost word for word from what I tried to drill into their heads a decade ago.

Now it's news all over again from some recently minted web guru.  Didn't have all the tools suggested here back then, but the basics would still have worked as well.  Sheesh.  Nothing changes; it just gets more complicated.

From Radio3D:

With a growing number of managers depending on their web and streaming traffic to earn financial bonuses, it seems that every week I’ll hear from managers asking, “How do we get more traffic?” Last week in Radio3D, we shared five ways to grow your streaming traffic. This week, you’ll learn five ways to increase your website traffic.

1. Get personalities to develop content about something they LOVE.

Strong web traffic starts with strong content. Developing that content is an endeavor that requires effort from the whole team—and the only way to keep your team engaged passionately is to give them an opportunity to do something personally meaningful. Don’t force your team to develop online content about things they don’t like. Let them contribute content about topics and causes they love.

If you have a morning show personality who is passionate about fashion or health and fitness, let him or her write content for your site that is specific to their passion. Make them the “Fashion Editor” for your site. If you have a part-timer who is into the local club and bar scene, let him or her maintain the local events calendar and “local blog.”

Don’t limit writing privileges to your on-air team either. If someone in traffic is passionate about kids and families, consider giving them the role of “family content editor” for your site. Get everyone involved.

2. Promote specific content from your site on the air.

What is on your site TODAY that is fresh, interesting, and will make a difference in the lives of your audience? You should be able to answer that question with something substantial every day. Then, it’s easy to promote that content on the air.

Keep in mind that if you are posting content about topics that you are passionate about (see point #1), cross-selling that content on the air to your audience should be easy! Let your passion do the selling.

3. Optimize your site's keywords and meta data to increase referred traffic from search engines.

Making your website more search engine friendly can dramatically increase your traffic. Make sure your website’s “meta tags” are completed properly—those are keywords and descriptions of the content found in your site that is hidden in every web page’s code. Also, be sure that your site has a Google site map.

Consider using free services like SEO Ranking Monitor to track the position of your website in major search engines.

4. Use “Sharing” links to let your audience easily refer their friends to specific content on your site.

Over one million sites use AddThis to allow web surfers to easily share content with their friends. Visit www.addthis.com to get a button for your site that will allow your audience to share your page on Facebook, Twitter, and other popular social networking sites.

Other sharing services include Share This and Add to Any.

5. Get more page views out of each visitor who comes to your site.

When someone lands on your site, be sure that they are easily enticed to view other content and information. Make sure your site is user-friendly and easy to navigate. Every page should have a clear path to “go deeper” into the site.

The average amount of page views for any visit on any website is three. If you can get more than three page views per visitor, your site is above average in average page views per visit.

More page views means more opportunities for sponsorship inventory (more impressions).
