April Fools' Day is coming up ...

...and I thought it might be fun to talk about some of the best and/or most ill-advised stunts and pranks played by radio stations at which you've worked or, as a listener, heard.

Over the years, I've put together some fairly sophisticated AFD bits, but the best ones have always been the simplest.

My favorite personal stunt, though, remains a bit that we pulled off...twice in three years, if you can believe it...at the old KIX104.  Guilty parties included Frank O. Pinion, Terry DaileyReverend Mike Anderson, newsman Jack Warnick and Michelle Kent.

We created an imaginary toll booth on the St. Charles County side of the Blanchette Memorial Bridge (I-70  across the Missouri).  If you were commuting East from St. Charles, well, today was the first day of the new toll and you needed to be prepared to pay, and in exact change...$.75.

Of course, nobody was prepared and everybody wanted to avoid the toll, so a lot of the commuters, who apparently were listening to KIX, more than we ever imagined as it turned out, headed South on 94 to cross over the river toll-free on Highway 40.

94 South became a parking lot!  At least that's how it was described to us by the several officers of the Missouri State Police who visited us on the 10th floor of the Westport Plaza Gold Tower to express just how NOT amused they were by our antics.

Yes, we did it all over again, two years later, over the Daniel Boone Bridge on Highway 40. That time we crippled 94 North.  And the State Police who came back to visit were even less amused the second time around.

Note to morning shows:  Don't EVER try this stunt again! I believe that St. Charles County has instituted the death penalty for this kind of behavior.

How's about you?  What caught you flat-footed on April Fools' Day?
