A couple times a week ...

... I hear from a 40+ media type who has exhausted his or her career and asks for guidance on to the next level.  I'm clearly not the go-to guy, but the requests still come in to me.

What can I tell these guys? Here's what I'm saying...

First, close out your options for radio, television and print.  The old media doesn't want you.  Sorry, but you're an antique.  No matter how much you know, or think you know, about new media, it's not enough, even if you know more than they do.  Which you probably do.

Second, no matter what you know about creating websites, no matter what you've learned over the last few years, everybody else now knows more than you do and they can do it for free with CMS and products like Wordpress.

Third, we've become a service economy.  The US no longer makes real, physical things.  We just sell and consume products made elsewhere and absorb amorphous entertainment commodities.  Especially look for jobs in management with service companies.

Fourth, the government is hiring.  Good luck.
